Read this before buying goats:
Unfortunately, in the breeder-goat business there are many people who thrive by deception.Be very cautious of anyone who says they own all the goats that they have available. We own some and we broker many. In 2005-2006 we sold over 16,000 goats. It would be impossible for any single farm to sell this many every year. The truth is they are brokered livestock. Yes, there are times that good deals come along and we buy them and place them on our pasture with the intent to resell them. But most of the places that I have seen on the Internet selling are either buying at a sale barn or buying to resell them. I have never purchased animals at a sale barn other than breeder sales where I have purchased seven hair sheep.
Things we do:
- Work your animals in very low stress pens that crowd instead of chase your goats.
- Carry our own cargo insurance policy on our haulers' trailers.
- Charge a fair price for bucks, dogs, and delivery.
- Offer full line vet testing at a fair price in 7 days or less.
- Have thousands of hours of experience selecting goats for our customers and ourselves.
- Make sure all animals arrive alive and merchantable or you don't pay for those.
- Have expert ranchers who supply us.
Things we DONT DO!:
- We don't sell goats to 1st timers and then offer them an opportunity to represent our business as a satellite farm. The lack of experience that these farm owners have is not their fault, but if they don't know what they are doing, are you sure that you are getting what they promise?
- We don't offer bucks that are not breeding quality to buyers for the purpose of breeding. Some other websites offer bucks that are worth $50 and these websites offer these goats for as high as $600. I wouldn't take these goats unless it was time for a cookout. That's just taking advantage of someone.
- We won't collect your money and expect you to wait a long time for your goats. In a worst case scenario we ask for 20% down to hold goats if you aren't ready for them. We always ship within 2 weeks of a deal taking place and usually within 3 days.
- We don't offer to buy your kid crops and then offer you half of market price. We broker your kids and accept $3 per head for our commission.
- We don't force you to buy certain health products so that your goats will stay healthy. Myself, as well as many ranchers that I broker for, have never used these products. However, we do use Alfalfa, Cottonseed Meal, Loose Minerals and a few other tricks that we have learned over the many decades of Texas goat production. The truth is you can spend lots of money on a product that could be as helpful as a $10 bag of minerals.
- I don't offer a hodge podge of Spanish Nubian and Boer goats and then call them standard Boer goats. I don't sell Nubian, my Spanish are sold as Spanish goats and the goats that are 50% or more Boer that show Boer characteristics are considered Boer. Most of the guys offering "premium" goats are what I consider to be "standard" quality.
- I don't accept bucks from whomever has them for sale, An easy way to tell that this is going on is look at the breeder and owner on the bucks papers. If they have come from many different farms that you have never heard of, chances are so have their diseases. Another reason that we get FB bucks from the 3 farms that we do is because they select for quality in carcass as well as breeding for profitable animals.
- I don't tell people that their business plan should include kidding 2x per year. That is not possible every year, and I feel that it is detrimental to farmers who take out large loans that they plan to repay by having 2 kid crops of twins every year.
