Dorper Sheep And Lambs
Due to the increased demand for meat and the lack of demand for wool sheep breeders have developed breeds that do not need to be sheared. We call these hair sheep because they shed their wool to reveal a hair undercoat. Some hair sheep breeds are: Dorper, Katadin, St. Croix, Royal White, and Barbadoe. These breeds tend to be very hardy and dont tend to need as much maintance as goats do.
While sheep slaughter lambs may bring 20% less per pround, they grow much faster than a typical commercial goat kid will. It is not uncommon to wean lambs at 90 days and weighing 100 plus pounds. Twins and triplets are very common. Care is similar to goats and these guys are excellent for cleaning up pastures too! Stocking rates are similar to that of meat goats and rams should be in a 1 to 35 ratio to ewes. We currently are proud to offer 7/8 dorper ewe lambs for sale as well as other herds of hair sheep. We are offering our hair sheep herds for $175 per ewe and $350-500 for rams. Please call us for availability. 512-801-2547.
